| Every family who comes through SparkHope Automotive has a story worth telling. Vanessa’s is one of extraordinary resilience. After escaping domestic violence, Vanessa and her daughter, Lauren, spent time unhoused while rebuilding their lives. As the mother of a daughter with autism and physical disabilities, she was determined to create a stable future despite overwhelming obstacles. When reliable transportation stood between her family and that future, SparkHope became part of her journey. At the time, transportation wasn’t simply inconvenient. It was one of the biggest barriers standing between Vanessa and the life she was working so hard to create. She and Lauren depended on public transportation to get everywhere. Medical appointments, therapy visits, grocery trips, school activities, and career opportunities all revolved around bus schedules. “My daughter can take off really easily and doesn’t have a sense of danger,” Vanessa shared. “Standing by the side of the road waiting for a bus was terrifying.” Every trip required careful planning. A wagon. A cane. Umbrellas. Special food. Long walks. Hourly bus routes that couldn’t be missed. “If we missed the bus that comes once an hour, we were out of luck.” Reliable transportation wasn’t just about convenience. It was about safety, stability, and finally having room to breathe. Today, that same vehicle has transformed nearly every part of Vanessa’s life. She completed the training she needed to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and now serves as Lauren’s caregiver. She has also returned to another passion: creating art. With reliable transportation, she’s been able to attend galleries, connect with the local arts community, and even begin selling her work. “It changes the trajectory of your life because you have mobility and agency.” The impact reaches even further. |

| The family was recently awarded a grant for a service dog, something Vanessa says would have been almost impossible without dependable transportation to training classes and veterinary appointments. “It’s like dominoes in a good way.” For Lauren, something as simple as having air conditioning has made an enormous difference. “Having air conditioning is huge for a kid with sensory issues. In the winter, she was resistant to jackets, but now we have a space where she can self regulate.” As inspiring as Vanessa’s story is, what stayed with me most wasn’t simply what she’d overcome. It was the way she talked about it. There was no bitterness or self pity. Instead, she spoke with genuine gratitude, optimism, and an unwavering belief that tomorrow could be better than today. Even while describing some of the hardest chapters of her life, she found reasons to laugh, opportunities to grow, and hope for what came next. It was impossible not to leave our conversation feeling inspired by her outlook. When asked what she would tell another single mother who may be considering applying to SparkHope, Vanessa didn’t hesitate. “Do it. Even though paperwork can be overwhelming, be persistent and hopeful. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Show people who you are and that you’re trying to do the right thing.” She also made sure to recognize the people who welcomed her into the SparkHope family. “Sabrina and Russ are salt of the earth. Sabrina makes you feel important and loved, and Russ makes sure the car is running beautifully.” At SparkHope Automotive, we often say a reliable vehicle can change a life. Vanessa’s story reminds us that sometimes it changes many lives at once. Reliable transportation gave Vanessa the ability to care for her daughter, pursue meaningful work, rediscover her passion for art, and continue building the life she fought so hard to create. That’s the ripple effect of hope in motion, and it’s why we’re honored to be part of stories like hers every day. |
