When Nicki first reached out to SparkHope Automotive, life felt heavy—financially, physically, and emotionally. A referral from a friend opened the door to something she didn’t expect: not just car care, but care for her.
Nicki is a single mom of six and works as a home health registered nurse. At the time, she was navigating an extended leave of absence after surgery related to a workers’ compensation injury. With her income reduced to just 60% of her regular wages, money was beyond tight. Car repairs felt impossible but without a reliable vehicle, everything else in life felt at risk.
“I was venting to my friend Felicia,” Nicki shared. “She encouraged me to reach out to see if I would qualify. I’m so glad I listened.”
A Busy Family That Depends on Reliable Transportation
Nicki’s family is beautifully full—and busy. She’s the proud mom of Eva (25), Cole (24), Drew (22), Ana (21), Bryce (14), and Flint (12). At the time she first received help, her kids were all about five years younger, and their schedules were nonstop.
“There were moments when I had kids in four different schools,” she explained. “Only two of them could walk safely.”
Adding to the complexity, Nicki’s youngest has a congenital condition that requires frequent trips to Children’s Hospital Colorado. While public transportation exists, it simply wasn’t a realistic option.
“Appointments, errands, and shopping would take quadruple the amount of time,” Nicki said. “When your car isn’t reliable, everything becomes harder, especially when your kids are counting on you.”
A Process Rooted in Care and Consistency
From the beginning, Nicki says working with SparkHope felt different.
“They are patient, kind, consistent—so caring,” she shared. “It really is a safe place to land.”
Client Services walked alongside her every step of the way—sending reminders, clearly explaining what her car needed, and encouraging her throughout the process. There was no confusion, no pressure, and no judgment, just support.
“They email the breakdown of what’s needed and work with you to get your car taken care of. It never felt overwhelming.”
Practical Help That Made a Real Difference
Over the years, SparkHope has helped Nicki time and time again with essential vehicle maintenance—oil changes, tire rotations, brakes, and rotors. These may seem like small things, but for a single working mom, they are the difference between stability and crisis.
Because her car was safe and dependable, Nicki could keep showing up—for her job, for her children, and for the countless responsibilities she carries every day.
Being Seen in the Middle of the Hardest Season
One of Nicki’s most meaningful moments with SparkHope came on her birthday.
She had scheduled an oil change on the first available appointment, which happened to fall on January 20, her birthday. What she didn’t expect was the kindness waiting for her when she arrived.
“Sabrina wrote me the kindest letter,” Nicki shared. “She had carnations for me—flowers that represent strength. The front desk was covered in balloons.”
At the time, Nicki was battling stage 4 cancer.
“I haven’t felt very strong for a while,” she said. “That day, I felt seen. I felt supported. I am forever grateful.”
Advice for Other Single Moms
Nicki is quick to encourage other single moms who may be hesitant to ask for help.
“Apply to SparkHope to keep your car running and functioning in excellent condition,” she said. “That way, you can do the rest of your life with a good, safe vehicle.”
Her advice is simple and powerful: ask questions, communicate openly, and don’t be embarrassed.
“This organization was set up for moms who need outside support—support that is not complicated or overwhelming.”
A Story of Strength and Hope
Nicki’s story is a reminder of why SparkHope exists. Reliable transportation doesn’t just fix a car, it restores confidence, preserves jobs, supports families, and reminds women that they are not alone.
