In 2021, Christa, a single mother of two boys, ages seven and eight, faced the daunting challenge of losing her apartment and the threat of homelessness. Fortunately, Beyond Home welcomed them into their residential program. Christa, who worked at PetSmart as a dog groomer, was doing her best to stay afloat when her car’s transmission began to fail. She reported the issue to Beyond Home, and they referred her to Hands, where her vehicle was evaluated through the TLC Program. Unfortunately, Hands staff discovered that the transmission was beyond repair and recommended she stop using the car. Christa was then admitted to the Hands’ Lift UP program, where she was provided with a placement vehicle that would meet her family’s transportation needs.
On June 14, 2021, Christa received a 2007 Kia Spectra through the Lift UP program. Over the next three years, she diligently maintained the vehicle to ensure it remained safe and reliable. During this time, Christa started her own dog grooming business and later took a job at her children’s school, working in the lunchroom serving meals. Her boys, now eleven and ten, are growing and developing their own interests— one is learning to play the trombone and wants to master the saxophone, while the other enjoys learning about computers and writing code.
On June 14, 2024, Christa graduated from the Lift UP program. With a bright future ahead, she is moving out of Beyond Home and into her own affordable home. She aspires to attend a culinary program and start her own baking business. Christa also enjoys taking the boys on sightseeing trips, including a memorable visit to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in her vehicle.
Christa is deeply grateful for her experience with Hands and appreciates the support she received during her three years in the Lift UP program. She now leaves with a strong understanding of vehicle maintenance and heartfelt thanks for the Hands staff. Christa cherishes the journey she’s been on and looks forward to sharing her story with others about the impact Hands has had on her life.
